Exploring Queenstown
Leave a comment StandardHello again,
The mid-semester break has rolled around already in Dunedin and I had the opportunity to spend a few days in Queenstown.
Queenstown sits on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, nestled amongst some of the smaller peaks in the Southern Alps. It is a beautiful and picturesque town well known for being the ‘adventure capital’ of the world. As someone who tends to avoid anything that makes my stomach do flips riding the chairlift up the mountain when we went skiing was enough adventure and adrenaline for me!
But as well as classic bungee jumping or running off the side of the mountains for parachuting there are plenty of other things that I got up to when I visited with my flatmates last week and I’m going to share a few of my favourites Continue reading
First Impressions of Aussie Life

It’s Durham Palatinate!
Despite an inauspicious arrival, in the first month that I have been here, I have already started to fall in love with the amorphous, evolving city that is Melbourne. From its striking architecture (my favourite so far is a palatinate purple high rise) and wide, American streets to its graffiti-filled laneways and edgy bars, the city is full to bursting with character, style and taste that is entirely its own. I won’t tell you too much about it just yet – I’ll save the city introduction until a time I can act as a true Melburnian guide – but these are a few impressions that stood out to remind me I was no longer in Britain, or even the northern hemisphere for that matter. 1 month in already
Leave a comment StandardHello everyone,
It’s a beautiful sunny Saturday here in Dunedin. Although the New Zealand winter is in full swing and the weather has been quite temperamental so far, I’ve almost been too hot in my coat as I’ve wandered around town today. Two years of chilly Durham winters has definitely taught me how to layer up. Continue reading
Heading Down Under
Leave a comment StandardGreetings, or more appropriately, g’day mate! Welcome to my blog, in which I will try to record the next twelve months as I move from small town Durham to the thriving metropolitan capital of Australian culture. It has been little over a week since I touched down here in Australia, on the other side of the world, and in a sense the UK already seems much more distant than twelve days away. Continue reading

Enough from me, who else is loving their year abroad?
Leave a comment StandardWhy hello there you fabulous readers! Only one more month to go until I’m back in England. Honestly, can’t believe I just wrote that sentence, it’s insane how quickly the past few months have gone! Everyone is slowly realising that this awesome year is coming to an end and there are a lot of mixed emotions about it. I’m sure you’re all aware of how much I’ve loved this year abroad experience, so I thought I’d dedicate this blog post to a few of my fellow year abroaders living with me over here in Canada. Joining a Sorority
Leave a comment StandardHi guys!
So as I was thinking through what a great next blog post could be, I realised my joining of a sorority would be perfect. If you do not know, a sorority is an organisation on campus which consists of around 100 girls from each sorority (800 in total at UBC) who come together to undertake philanthropy, hold leadership roles and have lots of fun. There is a male equivalent called a fraternity (“frat”) which is broadly similar, although they regularly hold parties both only with the sororities and in general on campus.
A (Belated) 春节 Chinese New Year in Hong Kong
Leave a comment StandardLoyal readers (so, probably only my mother) I owe you an apology. Why? Because I have failed, quite comprehensively, to do anything out of the ordinary this Chinese New Year (春节 – Chūn Jié), much to my chagrin. I’ve been a boring Hong Kong tourist.
It wasn’t for lack of trying though. Promise. Continue reading
