Joining a Sorority

Hi guys!

So as I was thinking through what a great next blog post could be, I realised my joining of a sorority would be perfect. If you do not know, a sorority is an organisation on campus which consists of around 100 girls from each sorority (800 in total at UBC) who come together to undertake philanthropy, hold leadership roles and have lots of fun. There is a male equivalent called a fraternity (“frat”) which is broadly similar, although they regularly hold parties both only with the sororities and in general on campus.

Bienvenue à Paris

August is coming to an end and so are my first two weeks here in Paris. Time went so quickly and there are so many things happening that I barely get the time to unwind and reflect. But that’s a good thing, isn’t it?

My Last Month

Hello all,

I hope you enjoyed my little video tour of Sapienza. My friends and I spent a while filming all the little clips, including parts on the beach in Sicily!

This will be my last post on my year abroad blog. Everyone warned me, but my year abroad went by so quickly. It really feels like only yesterday I posted the farewell picture on Facebook and boarded the plane to Italy. With my final exams over (and successfully passed), I had some time to see all the final bits I wanted see in Rome. Friends came to visit me to celebrate their graduations/my end of exams and together we saw some of Rome’s ‘best bits’. Continue reading

Two seasons of Doctor Who in as many weeks. That’s getting dangerously close to an addiction. Fortunately, it was as much a memory run as it was a time-filler; the buck stops with the last of the Tennant episodes. For some reason I never got into the Matt Smith series. Maybe I grew up.

Top 10 Moments from my Year Abroad

It’s crazy to think that this time last year I landed in Perth, wandering around the city like a lost puppy. But things have changed these last twelve months. I’ve learnt the sound of the Cottesloe waves, and I recognise the call of the kookaburra. I know the silhouette of the Perth skyline, and where to look to find the southern cross shining brightly in the sky. I’ve learnt which days petrol prices are cheapest, and when to be extra careful to avoid hitting a kangaroo on the road. I’ve become used to a lifestyle where coats and winter jackets don’t exist, and instead are replaced by a wetsuit and snorkel.

Things are definitely different – Perth has felt like home. Perth is home.

The Levant, otherwise known as the Levante or Sharqi, is a wind that blows westwards through the Strait of Gibraltar. Local myth has it that the wind has an ill nature and has curious effects: some say it slows the mind, others that it induces fatigue, and yet more claim that it invokes a general feeling of indescribable malaise. When it blows, the temperature seems to drop and clouds fill the sky, though it remains humid, and no amount of deodorant can hold back the sweat. People just seem to friction up. And yesterday, after a three day assault, it died away with the news that my home country had severed its ties with the EU. Truly, the Levant is an ill wind. Continue reading

Romans on the Road

Being on an Erasmus year isn’t just about studying. I spent a large chunk of my first semester settling down in Rome, adjusting to life at university, and strengthening friendships with Italians and internationals alike. I did a lot of travelling inside the city of Rome, but I didn’t venture out (apart from to Milan for Christmas). I have more than made up for this in the second semester.
